Here's why Andy Samberg is cool. When asked about his guest-starring turn on tonight's Parks and Recreation(airing on NBC at 8:30 p.m. ET), he delivers the following soliloquy, straight-faced: "Well, I don't want to jinx it, but I'm pretty sure it's the best episode, and maybe not just of this show but of any show on television ever, any theater show, any staged show, movie, or any, like, campfire ritual performed by cavemen. Take it all the way back. I think this is going to be the thing everyone talks about for the rest of their lives, and it will live on in infamy and history. If aliens came down and wanted one artifact to learn about human life, I think it would be this episode of Parks and Recreation. And you can take that to the bank." Hip goofball that he is, Samberg is a perfect fit for a campy, quick-witted show like Parks and Recreation. As park ranger Carl, a guy who "was assigned an outdoor job because his indoor skills weren't so great," he gets to play the sort of agreeable buffoon that he's so good at inhabiting on NBC's Saturday Night Live. Seeing him shine here, though, begs a question. What's next for Andy Samberg? Five years ago, his clever digital shorts on SNL were so popular that they helped launch the viral video era. Back then, his rap song spoofs like 2005's "Lazy Sunday" (with Chris Parnell) and 2006's "Dick in a Box" (with Justin Timberlake) were actually "the thing everyone talks about." Samberg is still one of the strongest SNL cast members, but his adventures off of that sketch comedy set haven't really paid off. It makes your wonder whether this charming cut-up has already peaked. For starters, there was his 2007 flop, Hot Rod. ("Wait until the best parts pop up on YouTube," Entertainment Weekly's Gregory Kirschling advised readers.) And since then, Samberg has had only a few bit parts in movies here and there (the homeless guy in 2008's Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist; Paul Rudd's brother in last year's I Love You Man). A week ago, he appeared on The Sarah Silverman Program as her horny imaginary friend (who was, again, a version of the lovable buffoon). Listen, Andy, you're too smart to go down in history as just the guy who did those funny digital shorts! In the future, if aliens finally do arrive and try to figure you out, I hope they'll have more to go on than "Dick in a Box" and this Parks and Recreation episode. A new season of Yo Gabba Gabba! premieres on March 8. And what's a new season of a live-action kids' show without gratuitous drop-ins by celebrities completely unrecognizable to children? So, in addition to recurring Gabba-ppearances by standbys Biz Markie and Jack McBrayer, the show will be visited this season by Sarah Silverman, Weird Al Yankovic, Anthony Bourdain, Weezer, Mos Def, and more. I know it's fun for parents to see stars from their universe dropped into kids’ TV neighborhoods as if by parachute -– Sesame Street has certainly perfected the art of celebrity appearances. But what happens if your children want to see more of, say, Sarah Silverman (who's actually appeared onstage with the live version of the Yo Gabba Gabba! show)? I bet kids would love those Comedy Central promos for The Sarah Silverman Show that feature her peeing into a mailbox. Anthony Bourdain's signature Travel Channel program, No Reservations, features a "may not be appropriate for you" advisory at the top of each show. And you know there aren’t even a lot of kids watching the Travel Channel. (If you think your kids are perfectly fine with this, consider how you'd feel if Elmo dropped by Law & Order: SVU for a little meet & greet) For the record, I really like Scatological Sarah and Weird Al, and I typically watch Anthony's show at the end of a fruitless channel-surfing run. I also know seeing grownup strangers -- not to mention strange grown-ups -- on TV isn't any more harmful to kids than encountering them in real life. And I admit to perking up a little when I see a recognizable star like Jake Gyllenhaal or Robert DeNiro on a kids' show. But seeing a celebrity who kids already know, like, and appreciate -- whether it be Michelle Obama, Justin Bieber, or Shaun White –- would mean something more to them, and I'd like to see more of that. After all, aren't we making this stuff for them in the first place?

Over the weekend, in an apparent nod to the recent Sarah Palin controversy, comic Sarah Silverman produced some cringe-worthy moments during a performance at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference, where she shocked the crowd by uttering the word "retarded" over and over and over again. Though Silverman apparently won the crowd over, receiving a standing ovation at the end of her performance, TED organizer Chris Anderson felt the need to voice his "retarded" disapproval over the Internet via Twitter. "I know I shouldn't say this about one of my speakers, but I thought Sarah Silverman was god awful..." As one of the event's organizers, Anderson should have known all about Silverman's proclivity for provocation. Repeating the word "retarded" a bunch of times tends to fall on the more reserved side of Silverman's comedy. Silverman responded by calling him a "barnacle of mediocrity on Bill Gates' asshole."
