Celebrities on Yo Gabba Gabba Who Are They Really There For

Source: iVillage Added: 19 day ago

A new season of Yo Gabba Gabba! premieres on March 8. And what's a new season of a live-action kids' show without gratuitous drop-ins by celebrities completely unrecognizable to children? So, in addition to recurring Gabba-ppearances by standbys Biz Markie and Jack McBrayer, the show will be visited this season by Sarah Silverman, Weird Al Yankovic, Anthony Bourdain, Weezer, Mos Def, and more. I know it's fun for parents to see stars from their universe dropped into kids’ TV neighborhoods as if by parachute -– Sesame Street has certainly perfected the art of celebrity appearances. But what happens if your children want to see more of, say, Sarah Silverman (who's actually appeared onstage with the live version of the Yo Gabba Gabba! show)? I bet kids would love those Comedy Central promos for The Sarah Silverman Show that feature her peeing into a mailbox. Anthony Bourdain's signature Travel Channel program, No Reservations, features a "may not be appropriate for you" advisory at the top of each show. And you know there aren’t even a lot of kids watching the Travel Channel. (If you think your kids are perfectly fine with this, consider how you'd feel if Elmo dropped by Law & Order: SVU for a little meet & greet) For the record, I really like Scatological Sarah and Weird Al, and I typically watch Anthony's show at the end of a fruitless channel-surfing run. I also know seeing grownup strangers -- not to mention strange grown-ups -- on TV isn't any more harmful to kids than encountering them in real life. And I admit to perking up a little when I see a recognizable star like Jake Gyllenhaal or Robert DeNiro on a kids' show. But seeing a celebrity who kids already know, like, and appreciate -- whether it be Michelle Obama, Justin Bieber, or Shaun White –- would mean something more to them, and I'd like to see more of that. After all, aren't we making this stuff for them in the first place?

New Media Journalism 101 Don apos t Get in a Twitter Flamewar with Sarah Silverman

Source: Fish Bowl L.A. Added: 23 day ago

Over the weekend, in an apparent nod to the recent Sarah Palin controversy, comic Sarah Silverman produced some cringe-worthy moments during a performance at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference, where she shocked the crowd by uttering the word "retarded" over and over and over again. Though Silverman apparently won the crowd over, receiving a standing ovation at the end of her performance, TED organizer Chris Anderson felt the need to voice his "retarded" disapproval over the Internet via Twitter. "I know I shouldn't say this about one of my speakers, but I thought Sarah Silverman was god awful..." As one of the event's organizers, Anderson should have known all about Silverman's proclivity for provocation. Repeating the word "retarded" a bunch of times tends to fall on the more reserved side of Silverman's comedy. Silverman responded by calling him a "barnacle of mediocrity on Bill Gates' asshole." Something tells us this won't be the last we'll hear from her on the matter. Huffington Post has more. *This post originally contained a factual error -- mistaking TED organizer Chris Anderson for Wired editor Chris Anderson. We regret the error. New Media Journalism 101 Don apos t Get in a Twitter Flamewar with Sarah Silverman

Source: Fish Bowl L.A. Added: 23 day ago

Wired's Chris Anderson has launched some notable media wars in recent years. Last year, Anderson battled Malcolm Gladwell after the New Yorker writer penned a takedown piece of Anderson's book "Free: The Future of a Radical Price." Consensus ruled that Gladwell won the day, but Anderson still had his backers. Either way, the exchange earned Anderson lots of free press for his book. It's safe to say, however, that nothing good can come from the writer's latest battle. As one of the event's organizers, (and as someone who works for a pretty hip magazine) Anderson should have known all about Silverman's proclivity for provocation. Repeating the word "retarded" a bunch of times as a dig at Sarah Palin tends to fall on the more reserved side of Silverman's comedy. Nonetheless, Anderson felt the need to speak out -- launching the retard battle heard 'round the world via Twitter. "I know I shouldn't say this about one of my speakers, but I thought Sarah Silverman was god awful..." Silverman responded by calling him a "barnacle of mediocrity on Bill Gates' asshole." Something tells us this won't be the last we'll hear from her on the matter. Huffington Post has more. New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media.

Strange Powers Stephin Merritt And The Magnetic Fields - Official Trailer

The new Magnetic Fields' documentary, which took Kerthy Fix and Gail O'Hara (also of Chickfactor, Black Tambourine fans) 10 years to make, should be a good one. There are the requisite talking heads -- including Peter Gabriel (of course), Sarah Silverman (why not), Carrie Brownstein, Neil Gaiman, etc. -- commenting on/arguing for Stephin Merritt's brilliance and blah, blah, blah, but at least in the trailer, the most interesting parts are listening to Merritt himself or watching him pal around with his chihuahua Irving Berlin.Continue reading Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt And The Magnetic Fields - Official Trailer...

Sarah Silverman Talks Season Three and More

Source: TV Squad Added: 35 day ago

It may not have seemed that Sarah Silverman was busy in 2009, especially since the last time we saw 'The Sarah Silverman Program' on Comedy Central was December of 2008. But she was busy behind the scenes. Silverman filmed 'Saint John of Las Vegas' with Steve Buscemi, which played the festival circuit last year and gets a wider release this year, 'Peep World' with Michael C. Hall and Rainn Wilson, and wrote her memoir, 'The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee,' which is due in April. Silverman was also negotiating with Comedy Central for 'The Sarah Silverman Program.' Comedy Central wanted to cut her budget from $1.1 million per episode to $850,000, which was a non-starter for Silverman and her partners.Continue reading Sarah Silverman Talks Season Three and More Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Programming, Interviews, Reality-FreePermalink | Email this | | Comments

And at the Grammys, Beyoncé thanked her "husband." And Jay looked kind of like, who, me? [Us Magazine] Smart water is out; coconut water is in: Madonna and her manager, Guy Oseary, have become passive investors in Vita Coco. [E!] Scarlett Johansson is 25 but has been acting for 16 years and says: "It's all I know." Also, of doing the Broadway play A View From The Bridge, she says she imagined people would ask: "Who the hell do I think I am coming up here? I've got no formal training, and I haven't been pounding the pavement on 42nd Street. I felt a little self-conscious about it. But Liev told me, 'The audience wants you to succeed.' I actually never think about the financial part of it — the pressure to sell tickets. I only promise to show up on time and do my part. And I just hope I will have the opportunity to do it again. I am learning. I'm learning each show, more and more." [LA Times] Ricky Gervais says that his character, David Brent, will appear on the US version of The Office. [The Sun] Andy Samberg will guest star on Parks and Recreation. [NY Post] A "close friend" says that Amy Winehouse says: "There is something about being with a woman that is very satisfying. [Reuters] Salma Hayek has dropped out of an action movie starring The Rock. [Deadline Hollywood] Michael Bublé's ex-girlfriend is calling him a "self-obsessed jerk" who craves "sex, cannabis and cake." Eh, could be worse. [Radar Online] Geri Halliwell's boyfriend, Henry Beckwith, was arrested for suspicion of drug possession following a night out in London; Police say he was carrying a quantity of "white powder" on him. [Daily Express] Jesse James is still looking for his missing dog, Cinnabun, and is now offering $5,000 fort he pup's return. [TMZ] "Tito Jackson is accused of single-handedly torpedoing a Michael Jackson tribute concert last year." The promoter wants his $7500 back. [TMZ] Martha Stewart's show is leaving NBC and going to cable, so Oprah's go-to interior decorator, Nate Berkus, will takeover her timeselot. [NY Post] Is this a picture of Rob Schneider picking up a marriage license? (Do you care?) [TMZ] "[The SAG Awards were] very exciting for me! I got a chance to meet so many wonderful people and it was all just really special. I met Warren Beatty, I loved him in Heaven Can Wait and Bonnie and Clyde. I watch it on AMC all the time. Tina Fey, I love her! She's so hilarious on 30 Rock and she had one of the most memorable and funniest acceptance speeches a couple of years back. She named all the nasty bloggers by their handle names, it was quite hysterical. Sigourney Weaver of course, I loved her in Ghostbusters 1 & 2 and Avatar, she was great. Jane Lynch from Glee. I mean, I love her! I'm very hooked on the show right now and she is definitely my favorite character." — Kiernan Shipka, who plays Sally on Mad Men. [TV Fodder] "I'd like to see my character not only dealing with the divorce of her parents or possible divorce. She had to go through a lot [last season] with the loss of her grandfather and just growing up and everything. Kissing a boy was [giggles] quite . . . kind of weird! [TV Fodder] "I'm going to do fewer and fewer interviews over the next year or so. Then I'm going to give up talking all together. Cue cheers from the haters." — Ricky Gervais. [Daily Express] "There's a perception of fame at the moment, where you're a celebrity and you go to celebrity parties and you drink champagne with other celebrities, and that makes you even more famous, but you get no respect. Which is why I never go to those awful parties. I'm hoping that I can avoid that side of fame. But it's kind of freaking me out, to be honest.
